How to make a Will

The Week had an article on How to Make a Will. I read it with some trepidation. Would it be a stab at solicitors?

Actually, what it says is, you can:

  • Write it yourself – quickest and cheapest and if you have got it right it will be binding.  “DIY wills are only appropriate if your circumstances are very straight forward”
  • Hire a Will writer – “this is cheaper than using a solicitor, but few will writers have legal qualifications and, unlike solicitors, they aren’t regulated and there is limited comeback.  They can be appropriate for “simple wills” – but research the firms carefully”
  • Consult a solicitor – “the safest way to ensure your wishes are carried out is to consult a solicitor.  Expect to be charged £150 to £600 for a basic will; the price will go up with the complexity of your requirements.  As well as helping with tax issues, solicitors can assist in the establishment of discretionary trusts”

It was a relief to see we got off well.

I would just add that for most people the price of making a will is tiny in comparison to its importance.
