Probate application fee increase

At Purely Probate we are sympathetic and understand that dealing with formal probate paperwork after someone has passed away can be the last thing that you feel like doing when you are grieving and coming to terms with a new reality. We understand that sometimes there will be a delay before you are ready. We try to be mindful of how are clients may be feeling and therefore to make the probate process as easy as possible.

We do now however urge our clients who need to apply for Probate for a loved one to come to see us without delay, because we are currently on notice that Probate application fees are likely to increase significantly at very short notice. Currently, there is a fixed fee for Probate applications of £155 (if you are using a solicitor) or £215 (if you making a personal application without a solicitor).

However, the government has announced that they may be increasing Probate fees as set out below:

  • £300 for estates worth more than £50,000 and up to £300,000

  • £1,000 for estates worth more than £300,000 and up to £500,000

  • £4,000 for estates worth more than £500,000 and up to £1 million

  • £8,000 for estates worth more than £1m and up to £1.6 million

  • £12,000 for estates worth more than £1.6m and up to £2 million

  • £20,000 for estates worth more than £2 million

The Government have given no clear indication of when these fees will be introduced so when we are acting for executors in an estate administration, we are doing everything we can to ensure that we apply for Probate as soon as we have all the information available.

If for any reason you have been putting off applying for Probate for someone can we advise (at the risk of sounding like a bad advert!) that you don’t delay, call today (on 01458 850146).
